SketchUp is not the most capable modeller and it does not need to be.
It is the fastest route from a plan to something a client can look at and react to, which is what the early stage of a design job actually requires. An idea modelled in forty minutes and adjusted live in a meeting is worth more than a photorealistic image produced a week after the client changed their mind.
The one habit that decides whether your model survives.
Loose geometry in SketchUp sticks to whatever it touches — draw a wall against a floor and moving one drags the other. Two hours in, the model is a single fused mass nobody can edit, and this is precisely where most self-taught users give up and conclude the software is bad.
It is not. Group and component discipline from the first hour removes the problem completely, and it is why that module comes second rather than late.
A downloaded chair can carry more geometry than the entire building you put it in.
Six of them and the file will not orbit. The course covers judging a warehouse model before you place it and cleaning the ones worth keeping, because a presentation model that stutters in front of a client is worse than no model.
For photorealistic final imagery, pair it with a renderer — SketchUp models export cleanly into V-Ray and 3ds Max, and that combination is common in Indian interior practice.
For large coordinated building documentation with schedules and clash detection, Revit is the right tool and we will say so. Being clear about what SketchUp is for is more useful than pretending it does everything.
Questions
For design development, client discussion and construction drawings through LayOut, yes, and a great many Indian interior practices work this way. For photorealistic final imagery it is usually paired with a renderer, and for large coordinated building documentation Revit is the better tool. Knowing what it is for is the point.
Different jobs. SketchUp is fast, so it is where an idea gets developed and shown to a client early. 3ds Max is where a scheme becomes a photorealistic image. Many designers model in SketchUp and export to 3ds Max or V-Ray for the final visuals, and that combination is common in practice.
Because loose geometry sticks to everything it touches. Draw a wall next to a floor without grouping and moving one drags the other. A model built this way becomes unusable at about the two-hour mark, and it is the single reason most self-taught users give up. Group discipline from day one prevents it entirely.
You can, and it will ruin your file. Many warehouse models are enormously heavy — a single downloaded chair can carry more geometry than your whole building. The course covers judging and cleaning them, because a model that will not orbit is a model you cannot present.
