Drawing office standards, not a command tour

Most CAD courses teach commands. Line, trim, offset, array — a tour of the ribbon, ending with a learner who can produce geometry that looks right on screen and is unusable as a drawing.

Employers do not judge a drawing on whether the lines are in the right place. They judge it on whether the layers are structured so someone else can work in it, whether the dimensioning is consistent and readable, and whether it plots to the correct scale.

Everything on layer zero

This is the single most common fault in drawings produced by self-taught CAD users, and it makes a file effectively unusable in a team.

Layers control what prints, what is visible, what colour, what lineweight. A drawing with everything on one layer cannot be selectively hidden, cannot be plotted with correct line weights, and cannot be handed to a colleague.

Module three fixes this properly, including building a template so your standard carries into every new drawing rather than being rebuilt each time.

Model space and paper space

The concept that confuses nearly every beginner, and the one that separates a drawing that plots correctly from one that does not.

Draw at full size in model space. Present at a scale in paper space through viewports. Once that is clear, plotting stops being trial and error and the question “what scale is this drawing” has an answer.

The review project

The fourth project hands you a drawing with deliberate faults and asks you to find them.

It is the least enjoyable exercise and the closest to real work. On a site, nobody tells you the dimension is wrong — a contractor builds it and the error surfaces expensively. Learning to check a drawing before it goes out is what makes someone trusted with a drawing set rather than supervised on every sheet.

AutoCAD — frequently asked questions

Do I need an engineering background for AutoCAD?

For the software, no — it is taught from the interface upward. For the work, some technical context helps, since a draughtsman is drawing something that will be built. Civil, mechanical, electrical and architecture students are the most common learners, though interior designers and contractors take it regularly too.

Is AutoCAD still used, or has it been replaced by Revit and SolidWorks?

Both are widely used and AutoCAD remains standard for 2D drafting and drawing exchange across Indian construction and manufacturing. DWG is still the common format everyone can open. Many roles want AutoCAD plus a discipline-specific tool, so this is a sound foundation rather than a competing choice.

Should I learn 2D or 3D?

2D first, without question. The majority of production drawing office work is 2D, and drawings are how a design is actually communicated and built. 3D is covered in module six and is genuinely useful, but a candidate strong in 2D standards is more employable than one who can model and cannot dimension.

Why does a whole project involve fixing a bad drawing?

Because that is what the job tests. Anyone can draw a rectangle. What separates a draughtsman is spotting that everything is on layer zero, the dimension style is inconsistent, or the plot scale is wrong — errors that cost money on site. Learning to review is what makes you trusted with a drawing set.
