Most V-Ray users adjust settings until the image looks acceptable and never know which change did what.
That works until a scene is slow, or noisy, or a material refuses to behave — and then there is nothing to reason from. This course starts with what global illumination is actually computing, because every setting afterwards is a trade-off between accuracy and time, and you cannot trade sensibly without knowing which is which.
An exterior is lit by the sun and renders quickly. An interior is lit almost entirely by light that has bounced, which is expensive to compute and easy to get wrong.
Dark, grainy, splotchy rooms are the single most common complaint, and the causes are consistent — too few bounces, no portals at the openings, a noise threshold set for speed. The lighting module treats interiors as the default case rather than a variation.
A scene that takes nine hours and one that takes forty minutes can produce visually identical images.
The difference is proxies, instancing, sensible sampling and knowing where quality actually comes from. On a real project with twelve views and a deadline this is not an optimisation, it is whether the job is deliverable, and the optimisation project is graded on the before and after times.
Colour, contrast and cleanup belong in Photoshop.
Wrong lighting, wrong material scale and wrong camera do not. Patch those in post and the patch evaporates the moment the client asks for another angle, which they will. The final project makes you list every adjustment so that the line between grading and rescuing becomes something you can see.
Questions
You need to be able to model competently in something — 3ds Max, SketchUp or Revit all work, and V-Ray runs in each. This course is about the renderer rather than the modeller. If you cannot yet build a scene, take 3ds Max or SketchUp first.
Usually too few bounces, no light portals at the openings, and a noise threshold set for speed. Interiors are the hardest lighting case because almost all the light arrives after bouncing, and the settings that render an exterior in four minutes will leave a room grainy and dim. The lighting module deals with exactly this.
Single bright pixels scattered through a render, caused by rare high-energy light paths the sampler found once. Increasing samples blindly wastes hours. The optimisation module covers the actual causes — over-bright small lights, extreme reflection values — and the settings that clamp them cheaply.
Colour grading, contrast and minor cleanup belong in post. Wrong lighting, wrong materials and wrong camera do not — patch those in Photoshop and the fix breaks the moment the client asks for a different angle. The last project makes you list every adjustment so the distinction becomes explicit.
