CAD Draughtsman

A steady, skill-based route into engineering offices for diploma and ITI holders, where drawing discipline matters far more than the software on your CV.

Skills employers ask for

  • AutoCAD to a genuinely fluent level, including layouts and plotting
  • A 3D package — SolidWorks, Revit or Civil 3D depending on discipline

The drawing is an instruction

Somebody builds or machines from what you produce. That single fact is what separates this from drawing on a computer.

An ambiguous dimension is a site query. A missing section reference is a phone call. A wrong projection symbol is a mirrored part. Each of those costs somebody time and occasionally material, and each is entirely avoidable by convention.

Layer discipline is the first thing checked

It is also the most common thing new draughtsmen get wrong.

Everything on layer zero, colours chosen by mood, lineweights that plot as uniform grey. The geometry may be perfect and the drawing is still unusable to the consultant who opens it. Anyone reviewing a test drawing sees this in four seconds, and it decides a lot of hiring.

The software matters less than you think

Fluency in AutoCAD transfers to any other package in a few weeks. Conventions, standards and judgement do not transfer from nowhere.

So when an advertisement names a package you do not know, apply anyway if your drawing discipline is sound and say so. Employers who have hired badly before understand this distinction very well.

The route out of drafting

Draughtsman is a good job and it can also be a floor rather than a career.

The way up is curiosity about the thing being drawn — why the section is cut there, why that tolerance is tight, why the member is that size. People who ask become designers within a few years. People who only execute find the work narrowing around them.

Is drafting a dead end now that 3D modelling exists?

Pure 2D drafting is narrowing, and that is a fair concern. What is not narrowing is people who can produce correct, issuable drawings and also model in 3D. Almost every 3D workflow still outputs drawings that somebody has to detail properly, and doing that well is the bridge from draughtsman to designer.

Which discipline should I specialise in?

Civil and architectural drafting has the most volume in India; mechanical drafting pays well where manufacturing is concentrated; electrical drafting for panels is a smaller but underserved niche. Choose by what is being built near you rather than by preference, at least for the first job.

Do employers care which software I know?

They care that you know theirs, but less than you would expect. Somebody fluent in AutoCAD learns another package in weeks; somebody who never learned layer discipline or projection conventions is a problem in any package. Drawing standards are the transferable skill and the one that gets checked in a test.

How do I move from draughtsman to designer?

By understanding what you are drawing rather than only how. Learn why a section is cut there, why a tolerance is tight, why that member is that size. Draughtsmen who ask those questions become designers; draughtsmen who only execute stay draughtsmen, usually by choice and sometimes not.
