Automation Engineer

A hands-on engineering career built on PLCs, panels and plants, where fault-finding under pressure is the skill that decides your reputation and your pay.

What the job involves

Skills employers ask for

  • PLC programming, usually Siemens and Allen-Bradley
  • Ladder logic and structured sequence design
  • Analogue loops, scaling and basic PID
  • HMI and SCADA configuration
  • Electrical schematic reading and panel wiring
  • Fault-finding with a meter and a methodical approach

How people get into this role

  1. Complete an electrical, electronics or instrumentation diploma and take a PLC and SCADA course to make yourself hireable
  2. Start in plant maintenance, learn the machines, and move into the automation team
  3. Join a panel builder or system integrator, where you will see far more variety than in a single plant
  4. Move from an electrician or wireman role by learning to read and then write the logic

Fault-finding is the reputation

Anyone can follow a working machine. Being handed a stopped one, with production waiting and nobody sure what happened, is the job.

The engineers who are valued are not the ones who write the most elegant logic. They are the ones who work through it methodically — check the input, check the output, check the interlock, read the ladder — instead of guessing. That method is teachable and it is what interviews probe.

Safety is not paperwork here

Software can be stopped, bypassed during commissioning, or edited by somebody under pressure.

A hardwired emergency stop that drops the contactor works when the PLC does not. Automation is a field where cutting a corner eventually hurts a person rather than a deadline, and engineers who take that seriously are the ones given responsibility.

Write logic for the person at 2am

Your ladder will be opened by a maintenance technician during a breakdown, at night, with the line down.

Unlabelled tags, clever nesting and undocumented rungs cost them an hour they do not have. In this field readability is a safety property rather than a style preference, and it is a real part of how colleagues judge you.

Integrator or plant

Two different careers with the same title.

A system integrator gives you variety, faster learning and a lot of travel. An in-house plant role gives you depth on specific machines, stable hours and less range. Most people start with an integrator because it compresses experience, and move in-house later when the travel stops appealing.

Automation Engineer — frequently asked questions

Do I need a degree, or is a diploma enough?

A diploma is genuinely enough for most automation roles, particularly with system integrators and panel builders. This is a field where demonstrable ability with a panel counts heavily. A degree helps for larger plants and for moving into design or project engineering later.

What do interviews actually test?

Usually three things — can you read a schematic, can you write and explain a simple sequence with interlocks, and what is your method when a machine has stopped and nobody knows why. The third is the one that separates candidates, and it is a method rather than a fact you can memorise.

Is there travel involved?

Frequently, and it is worth knowing before you commit. Commissioning happens where the plant is, often at short notice and sometimes for weeks. Integrator roles travel most, in-house plant roles least. It suits some people well and is a genuine reason others leave the field.

Siemens or Allen-Bradley — which should I learn?

Both eventually, and it matters less than it seems. Indian plants run both plus Mitsubishi, Delta and Schneider. The logic concepts are identical and only the software differs, so the second brand takes weeks. Learn whichever your local employers use and treat the rest as a menu-finding exercise.
